Pace/MacGill Gallery　【ペース・マクギル・ギャラリー】（32East 57th Street）より、来る6/27から8/26まで開催される夏の企画展、「MADE IN THE SHADE」のご案内をさせていただきます。

コンテンポラリーと巨匠たちのセレブリティーグループのモダンとヴィンテージプリントから厳選した【MADE IN THE SHADE】は、美的次元同様、この言葉の持つ独特な意味を追求したものです。
1950年代から使われるようになった【MADE IN THE SHADE】は、“極上の状態”、あるいは“理想の状況”を表す言葉として次第にポピュラーとなった表現です。
【MADE IN THE SHADE】とは、ある意味でもうひとつの“クール”、灼熱の暑さやまばゆい夏の日差しを忘れさせ、豊かな木陰での休息に辿りついた時のような束の間の“涼やかさ”を連想させる言葉です。　歴史的に“光”を操り、“光”を表現することへの挑戦は、写真家たちが元来、深く関わってきたテーマです。
“光で描く”には、アーティストとしての卓越した技量が要求されます。しかしながら、その実現こそが、写真というメディアを“独特なブランド”にする所以でもあるはずです。“光”は常に、アーティスト独自の表現力に深く共鳴し合う存在なのです。

自然界の本質を明らかにするにしても、コンセプトを表現するにしても、【MADE IN THE SHADE】展に選ばれた写真家たちはこの共通の意味を共有しています。

ラズロ・モオリー・ナギーの彼の妻、ルシアが浜辺でリラックスする写真では、彼女の顔はビーチパラソルで遮られています。一方、ローレン・グリーンフィールドは自意識の強い思春期を日焼けしたベッドで表現しています。ハリー・キャラハンによる、彼の妻、エレノアへのインティメートな一連の習作は“キアロスクーロ”（＝美学用語：明暗の配合による表現法）によって、作品に生命が吹き込まれています。そして、ジョン・シャルコフスキーは昼下がりの光の移り変わりを空中の塵で表現し、エリオット・アーウィットのスナップショットでは、木々の天蓋の下で催されたヌーディスト・パーティーでの厚かましい息抜きの場面を捉えています。
そして、プレイボーイ、ヒュー・へフナー、００７ ショーン・コネリー、チャンピィオンボクサー、モハメド・アリのポーレートは彼らの人生そのものが“クール”を具現化していると言えるでしょう。

【MADE IN THE SHADE】展では、マニュエル・アルブレス・ブラボ、ハリー・キャラハン、フィリップ・ロルカ・ディコルシア、エリオット・アーウィット、ラリー・フィンク、ロバート・フランク、リー・フリードランダー、エメット・ゴーウィン、ローレン・グリーンフィールド、マーク・クレット、ジョズリン・リー、ラルフ・ユージン・ミィートヤード、ラズロ・モオリー・ナギー、ジュディス・ジョイ・ロス、スティーヴ・スカピーﾛ、トーマス・シュツルート、菅原一剛、ジョン・シャルコフスキー、ゲイリー・ウィノグランド、さらにマグナムの写真家たちとその他の作家の作品が展示される予定です。

Beginning on June 14 and continuing through Labor Day, gallery summer hours are: Monday-Thursday, 9:30-5:30, and Friday, 9:30-4:00. The gallery will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Pace/MacGill Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition, Made in the Shade, on view from June 27 through August 26, 2005 at 32 East 57th Street on the 9th Floor. Featuring both modern and vintage prints by a celebrated group of contemporary and master photographers, Made in the Shade explores that phraseﾕs vernacular meaning as well as its aesthetic dimensions. Coined in the 1950s, made in the shadeﾓ became a popular expression that communicated a state of being in an excellent or ideal situation. Likewise, made in the shade can imply another kind of cool, visually conjuring sensations of summer: blazing heat, dazzling sunlight and the welcome respite offered by reservoirs of shadow. On a fundamental level, the challenges of manipulating and representing light have historically engaged photographers. Not only can writing with light' reveal an artist's technical prowess, but also its practice deeply resonates within the photographic mediumﾕs particular brand of expressive power.

Whether defining the natural world or articulating a concept, the photographs selected for Made in the Shade share this common catch phrase. Lazlo Moholy-Nagy's picture of his wife Lucia relaxing in the sand--her face raked by sunlight--stands in contrast to Lauren Greenfield's self-conscious pubescent subjects whose bodies absorb the artificial rays generated within their tanning beds. Harry Callahan's intimate studies of his wife Eleanor become animated by chiaroscuro, and John Szarkowski's rendering of a setting sun on a country meadow poetically captures the transition of afternoon into dusk. Elliot Erwitt's snapshot of nudists playing ball under a canopy of trees provides cheeky relief, and portraits of Playboy Hugh Hefner, 007 Sean Connery and champion boxer Muhammad Ali personify a larger-than-life sense of cool.

Made in the Shade includes work by Manuel Alvarez Bravo,Harry Callahan, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Elliot Erwitt, Larry Fink, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Emmet Gowin, Lauren Greenfield, Mark Klett, Jocelyn Lee, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Judith Joy Ross, Steve Schapiro, Thomas Struth, Ichigo Sugawara, John Szarkowski, Garry Winogrand, and various Magnum photographers, among others.
